Easy modo!?: The Touhou Thread
« on: March 25, 2012, 02:22:19 am »
THIS IS A TOUHOU THREAD

THERE ARE MANY LIKE IT, BUT THIS ONE IS OURS

ANYWAY. For those not in the know, Touhou is a top-down bullet hell/danmaku/curtain fire shoot-'em-up where you control a girl as she beats the **** out of other girls, and then has a tea party with them. Yeah, it's that kinda game. They're considered quite easy compared to other danmaku games (like the CAVE shooters), but many players like the Touhou games better because they don't look like ass.

The games are made by one guy, ZUN. ZUN is a many-talented man who is also an alcoholic and has made most of if not all of the games while drunk at least part of the time.

The games are only sold at cons in Japan, to my understanding, and are made in very limited amounts. Most English-speaking players are probably pirates, and that is as far as we will discuss arr booty. :| They are available for purchasing at some online stores, though they aren't always in stock.

If you want to see how the gameplay looks, you can watch these LPs!
- Zorak's LP of Touhou 1 (Highly Responsive to Prayers) to 6 (The Embodiment of the Scarlet Devil)
- Rising-Grandpa's LP of Touhou 7 (Perfect Cherry Blossom) to Touhou 9 (Phantasmorgia of Flower View) (ongoing; may ocassionally require an account for viewing)
- (ongoing; most videos in the process of being annotated).

You'll need to grab a torrent if you can't afford to import but want to play, unfortunately; ZUN and the sites I mentioned sell physical copies. if you have bittorrent or something similar i may have a link to/download for a clean torrent on hand. you can't prove anything.

Fake Edit: Here are links to the places selling the games. The Touhou Wiki also has the English patches for most/all games.

Yeah, torrents can be confusing/annoying, especially when people just. Will. Not. Seed what you're trying to download. (My computer refuses to seed, admittedly, so I'm not helping...) But it's probably the fastest way to get large files from computer to computer; I doubt I could have gotten ten gigs of Touhou remixes downloaded in under a day any other way.

...yes, I have over ten gigabytes of touhous in my hard drive. TOTALLY WORTH IT. Seriously, there are so many awesome songs.

How do you pronounce "Cirno"? I've always been pronouncing "See-r-no" in my head, but in Cirno's Perfect Maths Class it's pronounced "Chee-r-no".

I think it's pronounced Cheer-no or something similar. I'm not sure what language the name is from, so I mostly go by the way Rising-Grandpa pronounces it.

I always said "Sir-no", unless I'm singing a Japanese fansong, in which case it's always, well, "Chi-ru-no". I've spoken to a couple RL friends about Touhou, and we've all said "Sir-no". Nobody's corrected us yet, so...

If I had heard the Japanese pronounciation first, I think I'd be saying "Churn-no", which is the closest I'd know to articulate. "Cheer-no" sounds even closer, though.

Excellent, now I don't have to double-post yet!

I've been listening to this song a lot. It... It speaks to me, somehow. Maybe it's just the effort to reach the moon, a place that seems so far off...

Uuuusaaaagi, usagi nani wo mitehaneru? Juugoya no tsuki dake ja monotarinai!

Yeah, Eientewi is pretty great, and I'm not just saying that for its use of the original Kagome Kagome's lyrics (for those who don't get the pun in the title: Tewi and Tei are pronounced the same in Japanese, since the Wi character/phoneme has fallen out of use in modern Japanese, so Eientewi would be pronounced Eientei. ZUN just used it to show how old Tewi is. :v )

EDIT: Also! By the same group, Sakkyun Night:
