New SkyscraperSoup front page
« on: December 11, 2011, 11:20:01 am »
I'm working on redoing the frontpage of the site. Right now it has a full blog thing going on that I'm not using and just a bunch of unnecessary stuff. So I'm replacing it with two or three static pages that'll cover all the important stuff.

Here's a preview of what I have so far. I haven't coded a site by hand in many many years and standards have changed a lot since then. I'm using a freeware program called kompozer to help me but it's still difficult

Anyway stuff I would like to know: how does it look on your computer? On mine there are a few weird things like the header text and ad are all the way on the left, when I only want them to be kind of left-ish and there's a gap where the two main content columns don't line up above the footer and I don't know how to tell them to be flush with one another.

If you know anything about coding for a website and can help it would be much appreciated.

And the less technical question: What kind of information do you like to see on a person's about me page?

Yeah, the header and ad is on the left side of the page for me as well. I use google chrome, if knowing the type of internet browser helps. I'll ask my sister about HTML because she's fairly good at it.

And I like seeing where someone lives generally (like, the country and state/part of the country) and their age. Any other information is cool too, but this is what I look for in about pages.

I am using Firefox, and I can see both quirks you mentioned. Additionally... God, what do I call this thing? The little... place where you select a site section -- Comics, Blog, etc. -- has some lines around it that are kinda tight.

Guh... I can't words today. Okay, here's a picture:

Like, that first white line. I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to be there. Right?

Other than that, it's really coming together. I'd like to mention that I **** love the edited TWIYEH panels as eye catches for the stores. I especially **** love that you did indeed use the phrase "Books and Such!" as the Big Cartel store ad.

As for About Me pages... um... Well, if I were writing one, I'd give a standard profile (name, age, etc., whatever) and then maybe talk briefly about my writing history -- comic making history in your case, of course -- and current hobbies/interests. Or something.

I have the same quirks. I'm using Internet Explorer and it makes everything looks ugly. :p

I like what I see so far, very streamlined and it has character. :)

I use IE (never got on well with other browsers)
And aside from the top text and ad being pretty far to the left, it looks awesome! I really like it~

as for the About page, standard profile stuff like name, age, vague location...then a little background info on your comic-drawing/writing history and hobbies and stuff.

Keep in mind that I know less than nothing about coding/website making/graphic design, but.  I'm using IE, and I think it looks really nice!  The quirks you mentioned are not present as I see it.  I do think maybe there should be more separation between the boxes describing each comic.  Also, have you considered putting something different on the front page of Cuanta Vida after a while, so that people wanting to read it for the first time don't get spoilered by the final page immediately?

I'm on Chrome, and it seems that the right content blocks are slightly overlapping onto the left, and the ad is dragged down, which as you said doesn't line up with the footer. And this is just a nitpick, but it would be really nice if the text could be something more compact, and make it easier to read.

And as for the about me, maybe you could add some information to some questions that you find yourself repeating over and over again-- like an FAQ to cut down on people asking.

I'm using Chrome and it looks pretty awesome! Although I think that link to your dA page (and Tumblr) could be in the "About" section.

I'm using Chrome. Everything looks like it's where it's supposed to be, but the font choice and color (American Typewriter, gold text) looks a little messy to me. /picky picky picky

I'm using Firefox and everything looks shipshape to me. As far as an "About Me" page is concerned - an image of you, either photographed or drawn, would be cool, along with educational experience, where and how you got started in art, what influences your style, what media you use, why you started doing webcomics in the first place, stuff like that. Maybe as well favorite artists, writers, TV shows, fandoms you're in, and your policy on fanfiction and fanart.

Thanks for all the feedback so far guys. Sound like it mostly is working for everyone, other than a couple of minor hiccups.

Most of the font/color stuff I intend to iron out after the layout is working. Assuming it's at least readable and not eye scorching.

I call it a navbar, not sure if that's technically correct or not.

Anyway the line should be there, but it shouldn't be there.
It's supposed to be a line above and below the text like this:

Is anybody else having that issue?

The second image-- the correct one-- is how it appears for me.  Again, using IE because I am a silly person who cannot deal with change and never learned to use a better browser.

Yeah, the second image is how I see it. except that the arrows in "comics" is breaking the like line above the words. like,
___-______-____
      ↓Comics↓

IDK I'll take a screenshot if you want me to.

Alright I made a few edits:

*Added some padding around the comic descriptions to give them some breathing space

*Removed the text decorations from the navbar, the linked bits are still underlined until I find a way to remove them.

*Indented the crap at the top so it's more over the content.

*Added a new div tag to fill in the excess space above the footer. I couldn't figure out how to do it automatically so I had to very carefully work out exactly how many pixels tall it needed to be. It's flush at the bottom now for me but it may not be for other people.

DOBBLEPOSTAN

Okay I think it's more or less done. I just need to proofread everything because kompozer doesn't do spellcheck.

Anything else I can fix later.
